Judging Criteria

1. Writing: Does the writer use clear, concise language? Is there a clear beginning, middle and end? Does the journalist use Associated Press style? Does the journalist use quotes? Weight: 50%

2. Quality of reporting. Is the story complete? Did the journalist use credible sources? Does the story represent different sides of the issue (does not apply to opinion)? Are opinions attributed? Weight: 50%

 

Submission Requirements

1. Journalism entries can submit one article in one of the three sub-categories listed below:

• Hard News (has more of a timely element to it) 800-1,000 words
• Feature (big issue pieces, personality profiles and trend stories) 400-1,200 words
• Opinion; 400-600 words

2. The topic or issue needs to be focused on high school teenagers or education in the San Ramon Valley.

3. Prepare a typed article based on the sub-category word count (12-point font, double-spaced).

4. Include a headline and the sub-category for your article.

 

Journalism is a digital submission. You will be contacted by the category coordinator with instructions on how to submit your project.
