Public Education is the foundation of America's greatness. The essence of what we are as a nation was forged both on the frontier and in a free quality education for its citizens. We are the beneficiaries and inheritors of that vision for all Americans. As a member of the Board of Education, I recognize that an excellent public education for our children is both a gift from one generation to another and an awesome responsibility for those of us elected and entrusted by our fellow citizens to educate our children."

Greg Marvel was elected to his first term on the Board of Education in November 2000. He is currently in his fourth term on the Board. He has been a resident of Danville since 1996, where he resides with his wife of over 35 years, Donna. Their daughter, Kendra, graduated from the District and subsequently received degrees from UC Berkeley and Columbia University Law School.

Greg has spent most of his career serving the citizens of California in a variety of capacities at both the K-12 and higher education levels. He retired as the Vice Chancellor of the Contra Costa Community College District (Diablo Valley College, Contra Costa College, Los Medanos College, San Ramon Valley Center). Greg also served as the Assistant Chancellor of the San Mateo County Community College District. Greg comes to the District with a wealth of experience at the K-12 level, where he served as the Personnel Director for one of the largest school districts in California (Garden Grove Unified) as well as a personnel administrator for Fullerton Schools and Anaheim Union High School District in Orange County. He was also appointed by the Los Angeles County Board of Education to serve as a Personnel (Civil Service) Commissioner for county schools.

Marvel also has experience as an executive outside of education, having served as a senior manager with both the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California and the Alameda-Contra Costa Transit District (AC Transit).

After retiring from his position as a college system vice chancellor, Greg started a public education and software consulting practice that has grown to over 140 clients in multiple states, with the focus of his practice primarily with school districts in California.

There were many reasons that motivated Greg to originally run for the Board, including increasing SRVUSD’s test scores, professionalizing the District’s school construction and renovation projects, and bringing greater fiscal prudence to the District’s budget process. Working with other board members, District Administration and staff, many of those goals have been achieved.

Greg believes strongly that we have an obligation to provide the best quality education possible for our children as we prepare them for life, the rigors of a global economy and college or technical training. Although the San Ramon Valley Unified School District has some of the highest test scores in the state, as a Board member, Greg is always asking how the District can do even better. He believes our children deserve no less.
