From the Superintendent
I’m not sure where it went, but this school year is quickly approaching its conclusion. By almost every measure this has been an excellent year! With that being said, not too long ago I compared the school year (and really every year) to my recent trip to Six Flags Discovery Kingdom where I found myself on just about every roller coaster with my grandson. Like a roller coaster, the year has been full of highs, plenty of twists and turns, and yes, a few low points as well. From teams winning national competitions, to a state budget that is still spinning wildly (making our ability to chart a course very difficult), to our low moments as we dealt with the loss of a staff member, student family members, and even students themselves, we have celebrated and grieved together as an educational family and community. It has been my experience that every school year is a collection of millions of interactions, events and moments in time, which when woven together create a tapestry of joy, hope, success, as well as disappointments and sadness at times. Of all the celebrations that take place, two of the most important are still to occur. The first are our high school commencements. When crossing the stage to receive a diploma, our seniors participate in what may be the closest thing to a "rite of passage" as they leave their childhood behind and walk off the stage as young adults. I am confident that our school district has prepared them well and I wish them all good things wherever life may take them. The second celebration will be a recognition of all our retiring staff members, scheduled for Tuesday, June 7th, at 6:30 p.m. at the Education Center. Following a brief reception, the Board of Education will recognize each retiring employee. No words can ever adequately express our gratitude to those who have given so much to our students and to society, but we will do our best to honor their service at this event. During these summer months I want to encourage our families, whether your children are enrolled in summer school or not, to please keep their minds active through reading, writing, exploring and intriguing conversations, as summer can be a wonderful time for learning outside of the classroom. As we conclude another school year I want to thank you for your support of our district, the schools, and most importantly the students whom we are privileged to serve. We are reminded often how fortunate we are to serve a community that cares about children and about the quality of their schools. Your support is always valued and never taken for granted. Please have a safe and pleasant summer. Enjoy the time with your children as a new school year will be here soon. Sincerely,

Pine Valley Middle School team captures "Battle of the Books" title
Battle of the Books is a fun way to encourage students to read a variety of books carefully selected by our district librarians. The program is similar to our spelling and geography bees. Participating students are given 8 books to read during this year and provided with opportunities to quiz each other on characterization, settings and plot in a friendly fun format. In addition to selecting all the books, the librarians also write all the questions for the competition. Each school can send 2 teams of 6 students to the event to compete. The winner this year was one of the teams from Pine Valley Middle School. The runner-up was one of the teams from Diablo Vista Middle School. Congratulations to PVMS librarian Gerri Peterson and her team: Daniel Cox (8th), Sam Gershik (8th), Nora Illg (6th), Clara Stanford (7th), Michelle Wang (6th) and David Webster (7th). Also on the second Pine Valley Team was Luke Campopiano, Sarah Chi, Sanika Kulkarini, Ye Rim Park, Ameen Saleminik and Aileen Villapando. These students read over 1,877 pages and met at lunch to discuss the novels. Local school teams advance in academic competitions
The teams, each comprised of between four and seven students, have been working together since October to creatively build solutions to various problems. One team designed technical equipment to remove a variety of objects from the top of a 10-foot tower, choreographed a musical to explain the story and built the background scenery to accompany it. Another team created a shadow puppet theater, wrote a Shakespearean play and performed a rock concert to tell a story to 3 different audiences. Students participating from Windemere Ranch Middle School are Harshita Ravipati, Sania Karir, Sanjana Malireddy, Ashmeet Saggu, Pranav Gaddamadugu, Sai Rajesh, Siddharth Raj, Jetha Tallapaneni, Abhinav Simha, Raj Borra, Brittany Lagarejos, Ishita Mittal, Eesha Sasumana, Stephanie Yeo, Courtney Law, Christine Okimura, Navina Mathew, Heidi Kovalevsky, Olivia Ho, Alyssa Yang, Annie Wang, Royna SunderRajan and Navya Annam. Students work in teams to solve mind-bending challenges and present their solutions at tournament. For more information on Destination ImagiNation, see www.idodi.org. For more information on the DI teams in the San Ramon Valley area, contact Sharon Kovalevsky, sharonkov@comcast.net. Odyssey of the Mind Similar in nature to DI, Odyssey of the Mind (OM) is a program that challenges teams of up to 7 students to find creative solutions for given problems, the solutions being in the form of a short skit. Only the team may work on the solution, writing the script, making costumes, props, sets or designing and building vehicles or structures. The goal is to encourage team building, to provide creative problem-solving opportunities on a budget for students from kindergarten to college. Parents usually serve a team coaches, but may not help with the solution. Four Odyssey of the Mind teams from schools in the SRVUSD, by placing in the top two of their divisions at the California Tournament in late March, qualified to participate at the 32nd Odyssey of the Mind World Finals in College Park, Maryland. Jack Messerly, Alliy Bayliss, Austin Greene, Maddy Gillette, Jorge DeSousa, Zach Hanze and Tyler Donohue from San Ramon Valley High School built vehicles powered by mousetraps that had to complete several tasks. Teams from schools in our district placed first and second in a problem called Le Tour Guide, creating a performance where a classical character acts as a tour guide with three stops. Hayden Neustadt, Kristian Woerner, Kieran Woerner, Ellery Lewis and Jennifer Sweeney from Stone Valley Middle School placed first. Chloe Grossman, Claire Garrahan, Katie Klass, Daelin Dalaney, Mimi Diekman, Kristy Hammill and Anna Vojvoda from Charlotte Wood Middle School placed second. Also qualifying from Charlotte Wood are Melina Gross, Caitlin Tran, Richard Archer, Michaela Rubinfeld, Roger Dorriss, Matt Tillis and Ryan Mullins. These students built a structure of balsa wood and glue that held 490 lbs. Now in its 32nd year, OM information can be found at www.odysseyofthemind.com or the SF Bay Region website at www.sfbayodysseyofthemind.org. Fourteen schools in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District participate in OM. If your school is interested, a regional representative can arrange a free informational presentation. For more information on our local teams, contact Janis Dewar, jdewar94507@yahoo.com. Los Cerros receives "special" honor from Special Olympics Congratulations Los Cerros Middle School, winner of the Special Olympics (Northern California) Volunteer of the Year Award. The Volunteer of the Year Award will be presented at the 2011 Summer Games Opening Ceremonies on Friday, June 24 at U.C. Davis. Students at Los Cerros began a partnership with Special Olympics in the fall of 2010 with a Youth Summit to embrace the "Spread the Word to end the R Word Campaign." Students went online to take a pledge to support this campaign. In one year the number of students actively involved doubled as they volunteered at a Bowling Competition in Concord in November 2011. For a second year in a row, students and advisers along with the principal and office manager participated in the Polar Plunge in February in the San Francisco Bay. The school has volunteered for an annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament in the spring where the students are totally involved in hosting this event. What a positive learning experience for our student body as well as the Special Olympic athletes whom we host. In February, 2011, the 51 participants far exceeded their goal by raising $11,295.67 through the Polar Plunge efforts. News from SRVEF
