From the Superintendent

Dear Parents and Community Members,

As Superintendent of Schools, I want to welcome you to the 2011-2012 school year and personally welcome you to our district if you are new. I hope you have had a good summer and that it met all your expectations for what you hoped it to be.

Despite the continuing uncertainly that we all face regarding the economy, the table is set for a good year for our students as we have been able to maintain our class sizes in grades K-3, and actually reduce class size for some ninth grade courses. In addition, we have been able to maintain the content specialists in our elementary schools who provide expert instruction in such areas as PE, music, science, technology, etc.  In fact, I am hopeful that in this time of economic worry, stress, and uncertainty, our schools will be seen as a stabilizing force, providing quality education and one less area for our families to worry about.

As you may have read in the newspapers, the San Ramon Valley Unified School District has, once again, increased academic performance as measured by the state.   The reality is that in many ways the San Ramon Valley Unified School District is the envy of almost every other district in California. Our achievement level is the highest of all the large districts, 95% of our students go to college after graduation, we have facilities that have been improved because of past bond measures, and we benefit from a community that is extremely generous in its support of our students, our schools, and our staff.

But the most significant factor is that we are a district that does not rest on its laurels.  Instead, we are deeply committed not only to the mastery of standards, or getting our students into college, but to preparing each and every student for a world that requires global competency, compassion, and understanding, with the skills needed to make their world a better place than our world. This is the reason that SRVUSD is an exceptional place for students to learn and an exceptional place for teachers to teach.

I want to encourage you to look closely at our recently Board adopted  Framework for Excellence (please take a look at the framework at: http://apps.srvusd.net/upload/uploaded/SRVUSD_Framework_poster.pdf). Out of these triangles emerges a picture of what a 21st Century school district should be about. We do not claim to have fully arrived, as we have not, but we are working toward it.  Please examine the components carefully as they should serve as a framework for our continued commitment to improvement.

Again, I want to welcome you to our school district and to the new school year and thank you for your support of public education and specifically your support for our school district.

I wish your child the very best in the year ahead.  Let’s have a great school year!

Sincerely

Steven Enoch
Superintendent of School

State Standardized Test Results Released - SRVUSD students continue to improve!

The California Department of Education recently released the results of the 2011 Standardized Testing and Reporting (STAR) Program that show students in the San Ramon Valley Unified School District continue to excel academically in all subjects and grades. Results from the California Standards Test (CST) also show that the district continues to make gains in the percentage of students scoring at the “proficient and advanced” levels.

22,600 students in grades 2-11 participated in the 2011 STAR program, with 85% scoring proficient or above in English-language arts and 87% scoring proficient or above in mathematics. Despite an increase of more than 930 students taking the exam in 2011, an equal or higher percentage of students scored proficient or advanced in eight of ten grade levels (2-11) in English-language arts, and four of six grade levels in elementary/middle school general math (grades 2-7).

“To see consistent testing gains in a high performing district like ours is very gratifying,” said Superintendent Steven Enoch. “These results reflect an extremely dedicated group of teachers, supportive parents and hard-working students - all focused on core academic achievement for every student.”

The largest percentage of students scoring proficient or advanced was at fourth grade, where 92% of students scored proficient or advanced in English-Language Arts (a six-point increase), while 90% of third graders scored proficient or advanced in mathematics (a two-point gain).

In the Life Science portion of the CST (tested in grades 5, 8 and 10), scores increased by a combined 9 percentage points in the three grade levels.

Under the STAR program, California students attain one of five levels of performance for each subject tested: advanced, proficient, basic, below basic, and far below basic.

The State Board of Education has established the “proficient” level as the desired achievement goal for all students. That level represents a solid performance in which students demonstrate a competent and adequate understanding of the knowledge and skills measured by the assessment at a particular grade, in a particular content area. This achievement goal is consistent with school growth targets for state accountability and requirements of the federal Elementary and Secondary Education Act. The state target is for all students to score at the proficient or advanced level.

Approximately 4.7 million California students participated in the 2011 STAR program. Results are posted on the California Department of Education website at
http://star.cde.ca.gov
. Individual student reports have already been mailed out.

* Also released recently were state dropout data for high school students. According to the State's new CalPADS data system, SRVUSD posted a dropout rate of 2.3 percent. Statewide, the dropout rate was 18.2 percent.

Five schools open the school year with a "new energy"

SRVUSD’s solar initiative is near completion at the following five schools:

  • California High School, San Ramon
  • Dougherty Valley High School, San Ramon
  • Monte Vista High School, Danville
  • San Ramon Valley High School, Danville
  • Diablo Vista Middle School, Danville

mvhs3.JPGThe projects were funded through low-interest federal bonds that will be paid back through energy savings, and will provide 70-80% of each school’s electricity needs. Most of the solar panels sit on top of parking structures at each of the campuses and move to align with the sun to provide maximum solar output. SunPower designed, built and will maintain the structures, and has provided the district with a “performance guarantee” that will reimburse the district if there are any lost savings from the systems.

Please provide your school with proof of your child’s Tdap immunization as soon as possible. More information regarding the new requirement can be found at:  http://cchealth.org/topics/pertussis/
